Chapter 14
Summary of NetWare Utilities
This section lists and briefly describes NetWare 386
utilities as follows:
■ New Utilities
■ Modified Utilities
■ Unmodified Utilities
■ Utilities Not Included in NetWare 386
New Utilities
New utilities include utilities that are newly written.
For example, the installation utility for NetWare 386 is
completely new, rather than just a revised version of the
old Installation utility. New utilities, listed
alphabetically, include the following:
Utility Format
ALLOW command line
CHKDIR command line
DSPACE menu
FILER menu
INSTALL menu (NLM)
MONITOR menu (NLM)
NBACKUP menu
PCONSOLE menuUtilityFormat
PSC command line
RPRINTER command line
UPGRADE menu
ALLOW Enables a user to set and modify the
Inherited Rights Mask of a directory or
file.
CHKDIR Enables a user to view user disk space
restrictions including volume and directory
restrictions.
DSPACE Enables supervisors to view and set disk
space restrictions for users both at the
volume and directory levels.
FILER Handles volumes up to 32TB, files up to
4GB, 32-character names, case-sensitive
file and directory names, new trustee
rights, new file and directory attributes,
and the new file and directory Inherited
Rights Masks.
INSTALL Enables network installers to create and
maintain NetWare partitions and volumes on
hard disks. This utility is a NetWare
Loadable Module (NLM).
MONITOR This utility will have most of the same
functions as the NetWare 286 v2.1x monitor
console command and v2.1x FCONSOLE utility.
It is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) and will
have windows that display information about
utilization percentages and overall activity,
cache memory status, user activity, disk drives
and volumes on the server, LAN drivers, and
NLMs.
NBACKUP Replaces MACBACK, LARCHIVE, LRESTORE, NARCHIVE,
and NRESTORE utilities. Allows users to back
up data to local drives, optical drives, and
other network drives. Both NBACKUP and UPGRADE
have been designed to support DOS and non-DOS
devices. For NetWare 386 v3.0, various DOS
devices and a Wangtek cartridge tape drive are
supported. NetWare 386 v3.1 provides Device
Independent Backup Interface (DIBI) and, therefore,
will support other third party device drivers.
PCONSOLE PConsole allows clients to communicate with
the printer, including setting up the print
server, controlling network printing, and
viewing printer information. User interface
is modified to include information on
printer conditions. For example, the print
server notifies clients when their print
jobs are finished and notifies a list of
clients when a printer needs attention, such
as when a new form needs to be mounted or
when a printer is out of paper.
PSC Print Server Command (PSC) is a command line
utility enabling clients to control printer
servers and network printers quickly.
RPRINTER Remote Printer (RPRINTER) is a command line
utility enabling clients to connect or
disconnect a remote printer from a print
server.
UPGRADE Upgrade allows an installer to upgrade to
NetWare 386 v3.0 from NetWare v2.1.
Modified Utilities
The following utilities existed in previous versions of
NetWare and have been modified for NetWare 386. The
utility functions and, in some cases, the user interface
have been modified.

ATOTAL works in OS/2 and DOS.
ATTACH Supports encrypted passwords.
BINDFIX Supports the following three bindery files
instead of two: NET$OBJ.SYS, NET$PROP.SYS,
and NET$VAL.SYS.
BINDREST Supports the three bindery files located in
SYS:SYSTEM.CHKVOL Displays the following information: server
and volume name, total volume space, total
bytes occupied by total number of files,
unused bytes on volume, and bytes available
to requesting user. The total volume space
can approach 32TB. However, the utility can
show only 4GB maximum. For any space over
4GB, the utility simply returns 4GB. It
also returns information about deleted
files.
CAPTURE Modified for use with the PRINT SERVER NLM.
DISKSET Allows you to check and change, if
necessary, disk coprocessor board and hard
disk settings. This utility is a NetWare
Loadable Module (NLM).
FCONSOLE Functions depend upon the calls put in the
NetWare 386 OS.
FLAG Handles the new file attributes including
the Read Audit and Write Audit flags as well
as system, hidden, and purge attributes.
FLAGDIR Supports purge upon deletion bit.
GRANT Assigns trustees to files as well as
directories. Can also recognize the new
trustee rights.
LISTDIR Written to work in OS/2 and DOS. Has new
trustee rights.
LOGIN Supports encrypted passwords and new login
variables.
MAKEUSER Supports new trustee rights. Also allows
workgroup managers to create users. May
allow supervisors to assign disk space
restrictions.
MAP Supports encrypted passwords and the MAP
root utility.
NCOPY Preserves a file's Transactional flag when
the utility copies the file. Can also
recursively copy as XCOPY does. Can handle
Macintosh files. Can also preserve all file
attributes if you choose.NDIR Displays Macintosh names. Also supports
varying disk allocation block sizes, 4GB
files, trustee rights for directories and
files, and Inherited Rights Masks for files
and directories. No longer mentions indexed
files since all files are indexed when they
reach 64 FAT entries.
NVER Returns the OS serial number as well as the
version number.
PAUDIT Works in OS/2 and DOS.
PRINTCON Supports the workgroup manager.
PRINTDEF Modified for use with the PRINT SERVER NLM.
PSERVER Provides printing services for NetWare 386
servers. In many ways the differences from
previous NetWare releases will be
transparent to the user. Primary additional
functionality is found in the ability to
completely control all facets of the print
server from any workstation. These
functions may include bringing down the
print server, stopping the printer, pausing
the printer, rewinding the printer, querying
the printer status, and others. The print
server will also have the added feature of
notifying users of job completion, notifying
operators of printer service needs, and
controlling remote printers attached to
remote workstations on the network.
PURGE Purges all files in the specified directory
that are in a salvageable state. Accepts
paths and patterns for 386 servers.
REMOVE Removes trustees of files as well as
directories.
RENDIR Works in OS/2 and DOS.
REVOKE Supports the new trustee rights for files
and directories.
RIGHTS Supports the new trustee rights for files
and directories.SALVAGE Allows a user to select a directory
(including DELETED.SAV), view all
salvageable files in that directory, and
either salvage or purge specified files.
SECURITY Supports the new trustee rights for files
and directories.
SEND Allows server broadcasts and alerts to
supervisors and workgroup managers. Works
in OS/2 and DOS.
SETPASS Supports encrypted passwords.
SHCONFIG User interface is simplified.
SHGEN User interface is simplified.
SLIST Works in OS/2 and DOS.
SMODE Works in OS/2 and DOS.
SYSCON Supports the new trustee rights for files
and directories, user disk space
restrictions by volume, and the workgroup
manager.
TLIST Supports the new trustee rights for files
and directories.
USERDEF Assigns disk space restrictions by volume or
directory.
VOLINFO Supports a maximum volume size of 32TB.
VERSION Written to work in OS/2 and DOS.
VREPAIR Handles the new NetWare file system. This
utility is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM).
